Whitby, Yorkshire, UK
Yes, Yorkshire has a coast, even if York isn't on it. And you couldn't ask for a more
picturesque misty little coastal town than Whitby, at the mouth of a small river, facing the North Sea.
The mists diffuse the light enough to suggest black-and-white photography. Or sepia. You could
get a double handful of Profound Shots with Boilerplate Captions, and have a portolio for the next
local fundraiser that comes along.
You would also have a bunch of boring pictures. Respectable yes, but boring.
I dunno what I am going to get instead, but I'll try to avoid cliches.
Whitby has a long and turbulent history. Danes, Celts, Picts, et al all left their marks here
at one time or another.
There is also another(!) huge ruined abbey, thanks to Henry VIII, who apparently made it this far.
Is there any possibility that Hadrian is just a cover story? That his wall was really built by the
Scots to keep out Henry VIII? I'm sure they would have, given the opportunity.
Don't you forget it - tripping up here can be hazardous!
O, awwright! I can't resist one black-and-white shot! This one is a natural.
I swear, England - or at least Yorkshire - has the most entertaining signage of anyplace I can think
of in my wanderings. The next and final page in this series will concentrate on signspotting.
