Rhodes, Greece
Today is election day in the You Ess of Eh. People here are definitely paying
attention, but Greeks are focused more immediately on a parliamentary vote in
Athens, concerning new "austerity" measures. As one acquaintance put it, If it
doesn't pass, Greece collapses in chaos. If it does pass, Greece explodes in
chaos."
Meanwhile, in day-to-day life on the island...
Look who was in town again this weekend.
She is as long a cruise ship as I have
ever seen here, but far from the tallest.
The modern ones stack the decks up
to heights that cause some folks to question their stability in rough waters.
The Q.E. does not do Rhodes as a rule. I think they have been here lately as a
substitute for another port that is unavailable for some reason. We are near enough
to the mid-east and N. Africa to make that a plausible scenario.
She caused quite a stir the first time she came, a couple of weeks ago, especially
among the English ex-pats.
As long as we are down at the harbor, here are some of today's ripples.
This giant stone pushbutton guards the entrance where the moat ends at the harbor,
between the tourist pier and the ferry pier. You walk
past it now on your way to the Melina Mercouri Amphitheater, a couple of
minutes walk further inland.
