Rhodes, Greece
Ye Phish and little gods! This is the hundredth of these posts. Not the
hundredth photo-page since I started wandering; the hundredth page from
Rhodes! If some of the scenes are starting to look familiar... they
are looking familiar to me too.
A mere week and a half ago, this was the beach up at the northern tip of
the island. That is almost surely done with for the season. The winds have
wandered around from south to northerly, the temperature has dropped to
around 70 °F in the daytime, and distinctly chilly evenings.
I am settling in to a daily routine, centered around my two projects for the
season: lose some weight, and learn some Greek.
So the core of the day goes have breakfast, wander down to the common room
for a Greek coffee and an hour or so of study with my textbook and audio,
an exercise walk around some route that minimizes the uneven narrow
cobbleways and the thick crowds of tourists, who have become much
less of an issue the last week.
Finally, shower off the by-products of the exercise, and sit out front and
visit with one or another friend who has usually shown up by late
afternoon.
This cat is actually a dog, however little it looks like it from this
angle.
There are also weekly cycles in the rhythm of life here. On Thursdays, the
open-air market outside the Red Gate. So far I have bought clothes there,
and locally-made honey. Even negotiated the honey entirely in Greek - less
of a feat than it may sound,
but still satisfying.
Wednesday includes the weekly trip(s) to the laundromat, once around
midday to put the clothes in the machine, and again at day's end to
collect the results. Twice I have forgotten, and left it there overnight.
They have been graciously patient with me. Saturday sees the longer walk
to the New Market for the week's
Economist. That is far enough that I can work it in to the day's
exercise walk, as I also can the Monday walk up to the New Town district
to track my weight on the printing scale outside a pharmacy up there.
For what it is worth, the scale reports that I have lost a hair over two
kilos in the past three weeks. Not bad if I can keep it up.
Many of this season's photos come from those exercise walks.
These ordinary window are special because they are my two south-facing ones.
My east-facing window, before dawn. The moon and Venus are easy to see,
and you can just make out the dome of Recep Pasha's Mosque. Enjoy it while
it lasts.
