Rhodes, Greece
Something is unsatisfying about tonight's pictures. No matter how I group them, they feel mis-placed
with each other. So foo on it - just take them individually, or jump around as feels right to you.
The low-profile Church of St Pandeleimonos, next to the even lower profile Windmill Gate
(Not shown).
Yesterday was No Day, commemorating Greece's famous response to Mussolini. The actual word
"no" is apparently apocryphal, but that was certainly the gist of it.
It is a major patriotic holiday. I walked up to the festivities just in time to miss the
actual parade (a mistake!), but colorful costumes and festivity abounded, good for a couple hours
of people-watching over an espresso on a gorgeous Indian Summer afternoon.
Evening on the square outside of Home Sweet Pizza Pub. The arguably-too-biggus ficuses are still
beautiful.
A couple of artsy views from Mandraki Harbor. Looking toward the city walls. and the water.
Old city back alleys - can't beat 'em for local color!
A medieval gate that no longer actually enters the old city. Now it connecrts two harbors, through
a photogenic old barbican.
(Wot's a barbican? "a fortified gatehouse. It will often consist of 2 towers, one each side of
the main gate and room over the entrance way". Now you know.
Dining out in the old city.
The long breakwater at Kolonna Harbor.
Where to go in the old city. This former slime pit of a public toilet has been renovated, much
to the relief of its users, myself included. It costs 50 euro-cents to use now, which is well
worth it for a clean, well-tended place to go.
Local color in the local neighborhood.
Happy day after No, everybody!
