Rhodes, Greece
October - shoulder season in Rhodes.
The weather has been gentle with us - t-shirt daytimes, even
by my warm-loving standards.
The ironically named Virgin Gate.
As the nearest entrance to the medieval city
from the cruise ship pier, this gate sees a lot of in and out.
If you arrive by ferry, you'll probably pass this football field as you cross the medieval
moat into the old city.
Continuing toward the heart of town from the ferry pier.
The main tourist harbor. (A pair of cruise ships are off-camera to the right.)
Shakedown Street
Looking downhill toward the Moon rising over Socratous Street,
arguably the "backbone" of the tourist shop streets.
Uphill, toward the evening sky.
The old clock tower, over one of the secondary tourist streets.
Somebody is restoring this derelict old building in the back streets. Rumor says it is to become
an airb&b, which worries people that it will drive up rents. Historically, rents in Rhodes tend to
equal wages, so people need two jobs. Higher rents would cause real hardship.
The golden hour in Jewish Martyrs Square. Before the Nazi occupation (in WW 2) This was the
Jewish Market Square. Now there is a memorial to the deported population, and a vibrant tourist
scene in season.
One of the huger-than-ever ficus trees on the square where I live. Much as I love trees, these guys
are starting to block each others' light, to say nothing of the humans' light. The local
tree-whacking squad is in no way competent to deal with these huge trees. I'll watch this space over the
years, and see what happens.
