Rhodes, Greece
There is an outdoor cafe up in the new town, that I've made a regular hangout lately.
Friendly, OK coffee, but most importantly their chairs are comfortable for as long as it takes to read the paper, work the Jumble, and check the web for a bit. Not every cafe chair is good for that long.
After all these years, I still have no hope of carrying on a conversation in Greek, but my
Phrasebook Greek for ordinary business has gotten pretty smooth.
I had just finished paying up at my cafe on a recent afternoon, and doing the usual
"see you next time" stuff with the waiter on duty. Suddenly, his off-duty colleague turned to
me and blurted out, Thank you for learning Greek!.
Apparently it meant a lot to him. I mumbled something
passable.
Little moments like that are priceless!
In other news, these are my last days in Rhodes for now. Outta here Thursday,
hoping to see a bit more in this abbreviated season.
The plan: three days in Vienna!
(Yay!)
The longer plan for the rest of August - someplace new: Malta!
Why Malta? 77%+ vaccination rate, that's why!
I am still sitting on a big backlog of Rhodes pictures. I'll get at least some of them
posted here, even if I have to do it from Malta.
As Yogi Berra said, prediction is
difficult, especially about the future.
