Rhodes, Greece
Winter arrived with a bang this week! Thunder and rain for two days. The daytime
temperatures recovered partly after that, but the nights have been chilly. Then today
we turned the clocks back an hour (a week or so before the US does it), and
suddenly it gets dark an hour earlier - feels like Winter on an island.
Tonight's pictures are from just before the rains hit.
Today is a big Greek patriotic holiday - NO Day.
In Rhodes, it is also the end of the real tourist season. Most direct flights to
the island made their last run of the season yeasterday. The little airport is
said to have been a real mess, with many times its capacity in passengers. My
English friends were on the last flight to Liverpool at 11:30pm. I hope the worst
was over by then. I'll hear sooner or later.
We've had a couple of staff incapacitated at Home Sweet Pub, so they have been
closing for siesta 3 days a week, leaving a sunny courtyard without customers.
Less sunny now - the winter roof of canvas went up the day before the rains.
Uncannily good timing. My host is one of the most decent people I know - do you
supposed he is vouchsafed a line to the weather gods?
Trash as art: I accumulate plenty of plastic bags from shopping. Hanging them on
door knobs means that I have plenty of places to put casual trash.
Happy NO Day to everybody!
