Indian Summer on the porches of Fall...
- Robert Hunter, "Key to Your Room"
Three weeks into October, and indian Summer is still hanging in there. A
string of beautiful warm hazy afternoons, with cool enough evenings to zip the
legs back on the convertible shorts. Even the haze is not obvious. The only way I
notice it is by what I don't see, like the Turkish mountains across the channel.
Cruise ships are still calling - two yesterday, one today. The streets were
crowded just like high season.
Even Elli Beach had a healthy crowd this afternoon.
(Not shown here - this
picture is from a cooler day recently.)
The recent cruise ship Norwegian Spirit, tugged out of Rhodes harbor
by the mighty little tug Herakles.
Ten years ago, the public rest rooms were free of charge. Sometimes they were also
pretty disgusting. Now they cost fifty cents a pop (so to speak), and they are spotlesss.
Also stink-free!
Charging people to take a leak feels ethically questionable, but would you
clean public restrooms without getting paid for it? If it isn't worth fifty cents, how
badly do you need to go?
A cool courtyard on a hot afternoon at my friends' hotel here in the old city.
Shameless plug:
Spirit of the Knights Boutique Hotel was voted "Best Small Hotel in Greece" on
Trip Advisor. (!) IMHO They deserve it.
One of several underwater tour boats that ply the harbor and nearby coast.
