Rhodes, Greece

The countdown is on. Less than four weeks left in Rhodes this season.
The by-now routine planning is under way. When to mop all the orange
juice drippings off the floor? Will the current bar of soap last it out?
(Snowball in hell.) Gotta find a suitable box for the stuff I want to leave
for my return next Fall.
Still Life at the Street Market(s)

A boatload of nice but similar photos from the Thursday and Saturday markets,
Winter weather notwithstanding. That is either a rut or a theme for today's page.
So what do you know? We have a theme today!

After last time's page, a friend observed, "'Warts and all' was never the creed of
great photographers." S'true enough. Ansel Adams worked as much magic in the darkroom
(the Photoshop of his day) as behind the lens. The wonderful
Robert Doisneau didn't
get his backgrounds to de-saturate themselves, however beautifully it highlights the
subject.
On t'other hand, I have not learned to do more than the simlpest operations yet
with my photo editor. Resize, tweak the saturation and brightness of the entire image.
And I haven't time at the moment to explore further, so for some time yet,
I'll be posting "as is" unless there is a good reason to do otherwise.
(An upcoming "signspotting" page will probably give me some practice.
The signs are entertaining, but the photos all had unfavorable lighting.)

Language Quirk.
Navel oranges are known in Greece as Merlin oranges, after
an English botanist who first introduced them to the country. Google him yourself
if you are curious. His story isn't interesting enough to get a link here.

OK, market is over. We resume our stroll around the usual subjects, starting with
the patio here at Home Sweet Pub.

So, as time here becomes limited, if not really short... does it get old to hole up
in Rhodes for so long at a time each Winter? Do shrimps whistle? If you have any
lingering doubts about Rhodes, visit Germany, Scotland, or any place else North
of the Mediterranean rim. No place is perfect, but this island isn't bad.
Not at all!
