Rhodes, Greece
Cold, rain, lightning, and thunder today on the "island of the sun",
none of them to excess. I worked in an exercise walk during a light spot in the rain
this afternoon.
"360 sunny days per year", say the tourism promos. Today was not among them.
No photos in that dim dampness, but no problem there; I have a handful from earlier
in the week, all laid out since last night, ready to go except for words.
I also have a big bowl of hot, thick, house-made vegetable puree to eat
while I type. If you are going to winter, which is hard to avoid this
time of year, there are worse ways to do it.
Sophocleous and Akousilaou Squares. The pooch lives down the street from me on
Akousilaou. In this picture, he is strolling Sophocleous Street, just entering the
eponymous square. He is an amiable soul, if easily distracted.
The by-now familiar outline of the mini-ret of St Spyridon's Byzantine
mini-church. This view is from more-or-less in front of the laundromat.
To the right is the more distant outline of the long-decomissioned Mustafa mosque.
Yesterday at the Thursday market, outside the Red Gate. Most of the
soup that I just finished was probably up there yesterday morning.
En route into the old city, the little chapel of St John Prodromos, which I suppose
gives the Red Gate
its classical name, St. John's Gate. This is as literal a hole-in-the-wall
church as I know; it really is recessed into the medieval city wall.
OK, there is a church in the old city wall of Prague. St John's
is not the only one. But St Martin's In The Wall is there, and I am here, so
we are settling today for photos of St John's. Get it? Got it. Good.
I've been going on for years now about the state of Recep Pasha's crumbling
old mosque.
Wot's this? Actual labor going on in the interior?!?
Is this really the start of the rumored de-crumbling - err... restoration?
Stay tuned, I guess.
