Home in California
Imagery from 2019 & 2020
When I began these photo-postings in 2008, I had just re-branded unemployment as Retirement,
and set off to wander Europe in search of a good retirement spot. The idea was to enable friends
who were interested to accompany me vicariously.
Now I am becalmed at home by the same Covid-19 outbreak that has disrupted everybody everywhere.
I myself am travelling vicariously through my own pictures.
The result is a bit spotty, bouncing around from place to place even more than real
seat-o-the-pants travel.
Signspotting in Slovakia
Bratislava - especially the old city - has become quite the cafe and restaurant spot! Indeed,
parts are in danger of being over-yuppified. At a new Vietnamese restaurant, I needed to use English
because the waiter spoke no Slovak!
Coffee house art slightly outside the old city:
COFFEE
BEFORE | AFTER
Back in the increasingly upmarket zone, some slightly odd restroom signs.
LADIES & NON-LADIES
The last kilometer of Slovakia. The sign is already using the Austrian name for Austria.
Facing the other direction, and parphrasing: Welcome to Slovakia - here are the speed limits.
Some water pictures.
Actually, some light-on-water pictures.
Bratislava
a fountain ...
... some tree-droppings, looking more than usually lovely.
Considerably westward...
a park pond in Ponta Delgada, the main city of Sao Miguel Island
in the Portuguese Azores.
The island of Rhodes...
...well outside of Rhodes City.
The coast, near Archangelos
Looking across the Aegean to the neighboring isle of Chalki.
From Sevilla, the dazzle-magnet of southern Spain.
Two sights in the pools of the Prado San Sebastian.
We'll bounce back to Bratislava for the rest of the page
In the heat of the Summer, kids frolic in public spaces. At that time of year, I am usually in Bratislava,
so my favorite frolicking-kid images tend to come from there.
Bless the city yet again for putting up these misty arches in strategic places!
Put a fairly picturesque castle on a bluff over the Danube, and voila! - Bratislava Castle!
If these martians could shoot better, Bratislava's highways would be doomed!
