Split, Dalmatia, Croatia

My last night in Split. I'll miss this place.
This is my first time in Croatia in several years, so I'll go up and see someplace I haven't been before: Šibenik, a bit north of here on the coast.

Grgur Ninsky's book, presumably a bible. Also some swallows.

The plan is to spend a week in Šibenik, then return here by bus - about an hour and a half - in time for the ferry a week from tonight to Italy.

All the ferries to Italy are overnight trips; they take about 10 hours, arriving in Ancona, an industrial port with few if any attractions for a traveller. 'Cept those ferries to Croatia and Greece, of course.

The basement of the palace, more or less taken over by souvenir shops. The main passage from the Riva to the central Peristyle leads through here.

One convenience of the overnight ferry trip to Italy is the early morning arrival; you have most of the day to get to someplace other than Ancona. The train station is absurdly cryptic to reach from the ferry terminal, but once there... well I expect to reach Venice in the early afternoon. That gives an afternoon and evening to goof off before boarding the night train to Vienna.

Vienna?!? Yup! All this is really just a way to get to Bratislava; the way to do that from around here is to start in the morning from Vienna. Yeesh!

So um... why not get to Vienna through Zagreb or Trieste? Y'know, something sensible?

Because those also start with an overnight ride (train to Zagreb, ferry to Rijeka for Trieste). And you know what they both do then? They connect to that same overnight train from Venice, without even goofing off in Venice for the afternoon! Hooda thunkit?

Are you sharper than I? If so, you can figure out what has happened to the head of the woman in the cut-off levis. If you are like me, you will need to expand the picture by clicking on it.

A mechanical bull ride has been operating at the west end of the Riva for a couple of days now. No harm if it is temporary hoopla. If it is long term, it could be a crass pain in the rear.

That is it for tonight.
See you in Šibenik, perhaps with another round of Split pictures.
