Split, Dalmatia, Croatia
If you were arriving in Split by ferry, this would be your view as you walk into
town.
The fast-food joint where I am typing this right now is up ahead behind
those trees.
That tower in the distance is a church in the center of
Diocletian's old palace.
Another sight you would see soon enough is the Silver Gate, the east gate of
the palace.
For reasons I'll get to in a moment, I am including very few photos from the
palace in this set of pages. Here are a few things I see most days as I walk around
the regular town.
The palace is an endless source of cool sights, but getting pictures out of it
is hard. Here is an example of why. Those narrow little lanes lower the light
level, so that a photo doesn't show the places in the shade. Or you can adjust for
shade, and the sunny parts get whited out.
A modern High Dynamic Range
camera could solve that problem for you; my little point-and-shoot travel camera
just gives what you see here.
The Riva, on the other hand, sits there wide open in the late afternoon light,
and presents pictures faster than you can take them. Or than my fellow strollers
will stay out of the way long enough for me to take them.
The rest of today's
page is from the last few afternoons down there before sunset.
"... coming to the canyon ..."
My wi-cafe is packed with people watching the Italy - Croatia match of the European
Cup soccer. This appears to be a much Bigger Deal than last week's Ireland - Croatia.
It is apparently half time; the TV is playing militantly anthemic patriotic songs.
Ahh... sounds like the game has resumed. I cant' see the screen; Those seats are all
occupied by Croatians, which is fair enough.
Just before uploading: I think the Croatian team just won it. People are going nucking futs, and happy about it. Hmm... nope: still playing. Go figure.
