Split, Dalmatia, Croatia
Last full day in Split and Croatia. Tomorrow I check out of my family's house, leave my
laundry at the laundromat and everything else at the garderoba as they call baggage
check here, and do whatever for the afternoon, as long as it includes picking up the laundry
and leaving that at the garderoba too.
At about 7:00pm, I reclain all my stuff and cross the street to the ferry terminal,
to check in for the passport and customs rigamarole for leaving Croatia, which, after all,
is not in the E.U. until the first of July, and won't be in the common borders even then.
Crossing to Italy from here requires more formalities - at both ends - than the subsequent
crossings into Austria and out the other side to Slovakia. Sigh...
This plain old commoner's dwelling is actually inside Diocletian's palace. Must be a
potentially valuable bit of real estate if the owners ever decide to move. The home is on
an upper level of the palace, overlooking an open courtyard, and some layers of archeological
diggings.
On the Beach
Immediately west of the center is a stretch of rather sterile marina. Beyond
that, a seaside walkway winds along some low cliffs to a pretty
good pebble beach, past some small coves and some large rocks that get used as
additional beach.
Mural on the rocks, in honor of my muralist friend Suzanne in Rhodes.
It is a pretty enough stroll; I've been using it as my exercise route.
A dead critter by the trail side. The kid in the photo verfied "It's dead".
I didn't
recognize the species of critter. Not possum, or cat; too small for raccoon. Is that maybe
what a hedgehog looks lke?
It is a beautiful clear ocean; the local kids get some use out of it.
OK, back in town
Out behind the palace...
Medieval bishop Grgur Ninsky lays it down for
a school of Japanese tourists.
I'll be in transit starting tomorrow (Wednesday), until I emerge in
Bratislava, Slovakia around mid-Friday.
See you then!
