On a day that started and ended with stormy clouds, a beautiful clear
afternoon sky was too good not to get out and enjoy it.
I even had a
mission, or at least a peg to hang a walk on: find information on
sailings to eastern Crete, a soon-to-be destination. An excellent
excuse to stroll the waterfront, and after that the
medieval city moat.
A sponge vendor operates from a boat moored along the waterfront
amongst all the tour yachts. Not plastic sponges - real organic
formerly-living critter sponges. In their real colors.
Round ones, blobby ones, even a bin of long tubular loofah sponges,
standing upright on their ends. Neat stuff!
Four porpoises impaled on a saguaro cactus?!?
Go figure.
A hole in the wall
A short way into the moat I saw a small doorway in the base of the old
city wall. It's iron grill door was standing open. A low corridor led
right and left. Left was a grill barring the way. About 10 or 15 meters
to the right, the tunnel dead ended in a small space with an abandoned
cabinet and chest of drawers, an empty bottle, and a window onto the
moat. The grill on the window had a sort of rising sunray
pattern.
At least I could stand upright in the "room"; the door and tunnel were
made for people shorter than I.
Awwright, so you didn't come to Rhodes
to see a stack of empty boxes on the porch of the local
little grocery store. I thought the light and composition looked neat.
It is evening now, and those storm clouds are moving back in. Off to
upload these photos.
