Rhodes, Greece
A grey cold partly rainy day in Madrid, and I'm in a funk. My web site
won't even let me look at my own pictures; it probably doesn't like my Madrid
I.P. address. I am reluctant to have my hosting support people fix the problem
today, because I am outta here tomorrow anyway for Sevilla, and they will
probably need to do it again for whatever address I have there.
Good old Summer Season - when I move frequently, and keep those great
support folks on their toes.
So, what to do with a dull afternoon in a city I've never really taken to?
Finish up a page of Greek Island pictures from February!
Rhodes is my Winter base, and it still hasn't run out of pictures.
Today's
first three shots are all on familiar turf in Rhodes City.
A friend likes to refer to Rhodes as "The Big Island". I understand him better
now that I have seen some of the smaller Dodecanese islands.
My Finnish friend Seppo and I set off on a day trip to Symi. The ferry
turned out not to go to Symi that day, so we re-targeted to Tilos. The idea
was to see a new island, and Tilos is as new to me as any.
En route to Tilos, the ferry made a quick stop at this even smaller
island of Chalki. Purty looking little place, isn't it!
The name Tilos is said to be derived from Telos, "at the end".
There is a certain edge-of-the-world feel to it.
When you step off the ferry onto Tilos, time lets its breath out and relaxes.
I felt as if my whole body just slowed down. The shore is lined for a mile
or so with empty beach hotels, all hibernating away until Summer comes. Only the
ocean waves move, and their long slow dance sets the rhythm of the place.
Hoom, homm! Seppo, being decidedly un-hasty with a local beach ent.
A tiny living village nestles in the heart of it all. After our walk, we
settled down for a leisurely coffee, before the ferry arrived to take us back to
Rhodes. The thought of returning to Rhodes from Tilos felt like returning from
Rhodes to Athens.
En route back to Rhodes. The catamaran ferry kicks up quite a wake.
Another brief call at Chalki. It looks neat enough to deserve a day-trip
of its own. My only worry is the 6-7 hours before the return ferry.
How long before tranquil could turn to tedious?
Only one way to find out - next Winter season!
