Rhodes, Greece
Part 2 of the first impressions of 2013.
Or the first photogenic ones; New Years
Day was mostly drizzly.
There could be worse things to lead off with than new year ripples at Kolonna
Harbor ...
... or the promenade up at Mandraki Harbor. Thank The Italians for
this one.
As every winter, the ubiquitous Rhodian hibisci have had a rough time with
the colder spells.
Even the stubborn ones are showing the signs of struggle.
Looks like junkie heaven until you learn that in Greece, Fix is a
popular mass-market beer, the equivalent of, say, Budweiser in the U.S.
Thursday - market day again! It comes around every week.
I was looking to
replace my just-depleted jar of thyme honey, but the honey vendor was missing
this week. I did score a kilo and a half of fine mandarinia though.
Very seedy, so to speak, but sweet and tasty - worth the hassle with the seeds.
My quest for honey ended very nicely just now. My host and friend, the pub chef,
orders his honey directly from a local beekeeper, who delivers it right to us.
Wonderful stuff! I like it better than the market honey, which in turn is nicer
than brand-name honey from the supermarket.
Before the holidays, I asked the staff here to add a kilo for me to their next
honey order. It arrived at my table as I was booting up the puter and waiting for
dinner. This little piece of life is sweet ... and tasty.
Not all the local flora are struggling as hard as the hibisci. The scrub
pines and the poinsettias are as perky as ever.
The Wood Between The Worlds usually looks lovely, but the light that
penetrates the fir and cedar canopy is too flat for a cheap little camera to
do it justice ... except just before sunset!
Overriding the automatic color
balance doesn't hurt when the light itself is so off-white.
