"They doubt that there is a devil. But that the Earth rolls along, like
a marble in the gutter... that they believe!
- A church official, in B. Brecht, Life of Galileo
Yesterday... Thursday! Market Day!
The day before the Solstice! As our world whirls along, its axis pointed straight
toward the sun for just a moment today.
Last chance to stock up
on goodies before the world doesn't end.
Is this finally the end of the End of
the World? One can only hope.
As usual, back across the moat through the Red Gate.
This extra-wide stretch of moat has a fortifiied mesa running down the
center, so that besiegers would essentially need to cross two moats to reach
the city walls. A tunnel through the upper part of the mesa connects the two arched
bridges that cross their respective halves of the moat.
That still sounds unclear. If you can't make sense of it, look
at it on Google Earth.
My friends are back from Leros for a few days before they continue on to
Switzerland. This means I get to resume my part-time uncling to a nimble-footed
young player of hide-and-seek in the moat.
And so, as the porpoises jump slowly into the evening sky, and the Earth begins
its slow, twirling swing back to Summer, the new calendars go up, and life keeps
on living.
It'll do.
