Olomouc, Moravia, Czech Republic
Olla What?!?
Promounced olla-moats. This
town was a major power centuries ago. It lies in the
eastern Czech province of North Moravia, on the banks of - you guessed it - the
river Morava. For centuries it has been a major university town. Composer Gustav Mahler once lived here, working for the city philharmonic orchestra. A plaque identifies the Cafe Destiny's building as the house he lived in.
The old town centers around two connected squares, Upper (Horní so help me) and Lower (Dolní).
That ornate building is the old city hall on Upper Square. Surrounding it are three fountains and the baroque Holy Trinity Column.
A passage leads through the wall from park to castle. Here are a
small guard tower, the lower entrance, the stairs, the upper exit, and
looking back down to the upper exit. Got all that? S'ok; it doesn't
count on your grade.
These pipes on the back of a small pickup could have been anywhere. I liked the light and arrangement.
The most modern of those fountains in Upper Square is a popular splash and play place with kids on these hot humid summer days.
A lovely place all right.
Next: an Astronomy Clock to rival Prague's, and other stuff.
