Normandy 2010
The year is 2010, and I am working my way across Normandy to get to
Somerset, England.
Today's stop is Caen, an attractive city that
is probably
fine to live in, but only moderately interesting to a tourist.
Of course, anyplace I have never been is interesting by definition!
Caen was William the Conqueror's home base. His castle on the
town hill is one of the few genuine tourist attractions.
This chorus of columns on a Catholic chapel made a nice visual leitmotif from ...
... the courtyard of my little indie hotel.
A Day Trip to Bayeux.
Isn't this a great little footbridge?!
More on Bayeux in the next post. I liked it enough to spend a few days there after Caen.
Back in Caen, for the rest of the page.
Ornate, lacy stonework! High gothic churches treat the eyes!
This looks like one thundering pipe organ! Wouldn't you love to hear some
good Bach works on it? Or imagine your favorite piano wizard!
Caen lies about 13 km inland from the English Channel, on the Orne river.
The Caen Canal parallels the river, and provides the city's
harbor.
I gather that there is a university near William's castle. The lawns on
castle hill are a popular hang-out spot.
Who can blame the hanger-outers?!
Next up: Bayeux, Normandy
