California
Imagery - Split, Croatia 2012
One last round of images from Split.
Is this dragging on?
So is covid-19; we have plenty of time ahead of us.
From the vaulted ceiling, I think this is one of the many shops in the palace
basement.
Certainly, this is the view from the peristyle, toward the
Silver Gate, the palace's eastern entry.
Over the centuries, twisty little residential mazes have grown up within
Diocletian's Roman walls. A picturesque enough spot for happy coupling.
In Roman times, the sea came right up against the palace's south wall.
Since then, this popular promenade, the Riva, has been added.
This is where Split's golden hour - the hour before sunset - show its glow
to most spectacular effect. Lighting a la Maxfield Parrish!
A year after this photo, I found a laundromat in Split. I think it was new.
In any case, I hung my own laundry out to dry during this stay there.
The landward side of the palace.
In Diocletian's time,
this was the front side.
Now it is the back. Omnia mutantur!
Hi ho! Hi ho! Some tour group on an afternoon.
Grgur Ninski's huge image towers over the palace's north entrance,
called - so help me - The Golden Gate!
A color picture of a black-and-white scene! A cafe outside the palace walls.
A mechanical bull ride on the Riva. I think it was temporary. I never saw it
on any other visit.
A bakery at night.
(Also a shout-out to my friend Aphro.
She will understand the reference.)
Here we are again, on that same overnight ferry to Italy!
The ferry provides a kissing zone. You have to bring your own accomplice in
the deed. No discount if you fail to use the zone as directed.
Say goodbye to Split!
Next stop - the Opatija Riviera!
