Wellington, NZ
Half way to the stars
The Wellington Cable Car climbs its way from the city center, via
a couple of short tunnels.
At the top, we find a vista over the bay ...
Instructions for using a sundial!
... and an observatory, with planetarium
and a self-service sundial - you yourself are the gnomon.
Down in town - it's Sign Spotting Time!
The multi-ethnic neighborhood Te Aro is a fine place to start.
With a name like this, you'd think i'd remember what kind of food they offered.
But I don't.
Somebody will be pleased to know that I almost never stop at all times.
Quasi-representational photography in the heart of town ...
... including the waterfront.
All official signs are bilingual. The Maori word for women is very similar
to Hawaiian.
(Pat Paulson once quipped that a wahini is "something you put on
a ba-hun with ma-hustard".)
From that hill top vista, you don't need to ride the Cable Car back down.
The aptly-named Downhill Walk
gives you about an hour's stroll through the Wellington Botanical Garden to the heart of
downtown.
Excelsior! so to speak.
