Walnut Creek, Calif

I am in suburban California for a month. I produce less interesting photos here than in Rhodes, so let's return to the Aegean, starting with...

The Secret Garden
Two derelict houses on two different streets. Their adjacent back yards combine in an enthusiastic free-for-all in still life.

Not entirely secret - somebody has beaten paths through the overgrowth - but certainly off the package tour circuit.

Not someplace you pass on your way to go grocery shopping.

Watch your footing carefully! There are shafts and pitfalls into the archaeological labyrinth beneath.

One of the derelict houses is a lovely old mansion in what looks to me like Ottoman style. Patios with patterrned tile work, enclosed porches ... Somebody with more expertise and $$ than I could make a project of restoring the place.

"Come not between the nazgûl and his prey..."

Finally, a place that I do pass on my way to do grocery shopping: the basilica of St. Michael, and an adjacent residential street.
