Rhodes, Greece
The week before Christmas on a Greek island.
Unlike Thanksgiving, Christmas is a big deal in this Orthodox
Christian country.
To their credit, there was no sign of seasonal decorations or hype before
the start of December.
Today's page has no theme - just whatever images came in through the lens
and caught my attention.
That neighborhood cliche, St. Fanourios Street. The arches are
reinforcements for resistance to earthquakes. A sort of medieval building
code.
The city walls from the San Francisco Gate. The square towers are almost
as old as the wall itself. Originally they stood free. Later they were
connected to the main body of the wall. The round fortification at the end
is a newer bastion from the 1400's, protecting the Red Gate.
"Wer reitet so spät, durch Nacht und Wind? ..."
- Goethe
(Who's riding so late through night and Wind? ...)
This image evokes Goethe's ballad more than the reality did. Aiming into the
sun can give really melodramatic lighting.
I intended to save last Thursday's market images, and combine them with
tomorrow's.
These bananas were too much fun to wait. Anyway, today's light but steady
drizzle is predicted to continue tomorrow.
From the beach by the little boatyard... that is the empty cruise ship
pier, backed by Turkey in the distance. If the Earth were flat, Rhodes
would be pretty
close to The Edge.
Today's collection of ripples and reflections.
Windshields don't ripple exactly, but they can reflect.
Fifteenth and twenty-first century technologies.
Enjoy the season, Everybody!
Anybody who wants a couple of drizzly days from Greece is welcome to come
and get them.
I'm sure we would trade them for half-a-dozen space needle pelts.
