Gozo island, Malta

A Day Trip To Gozo
Malta's second island

Mgarr (MM-jar), Gozo's main ferry harbor.

Gozo is a small island, but at ~9 miles long, it is still too big to just explore on foot in a day. A "hop on hop off" sightseeing bus leaves right from the ferry terminal.

As in Malta, towns in Gozo are hill towns.

Victoria, the central town. All roads lead to (or from, or near) it.

Gozitians usually call Victoria by its older name Rabat, not to be confused with another Rabat on the main island.

Like the main island, Gozo is rocky and arid. Agriculture here must be a challenge.

The Basilica of the Shrine of Ta' Pinu, stands in open countryside, making it a favorite site for tourists as well as worshippers.

Part of a Roman(!) water system in Gozo.

The beach town of Xlendi (SHLEN-dee) ...

... nestles on its eponymous bay at the southwest corner of Gozo.

Of the places I could see from the top of the sightseeing bus, Xlendi is the most attractive candidate for a return multi-day visit someday.

Another hill town perches above Ramla Bay, as our tour bus approaches Mgarr harbor for the return fast ferry to Malta.

From the fast catamaran ferry, we see the slower car ferry, returning from the short crossing to Malta's west coast.

Leaving Mgarr harbor.
