Huelva, Spain
Costa de la Luz
Basing myself in the county seat town of Huelva for a couple
of weeks, about an hour by bus from Sevilla, on the Costa de la Luz,
Spain's coast on the Atlantic side of Gibraltar. We'll get to Huelva, but
first let's see one of two day trips I've made to Sevilla itself.
Sevilla was in full hoopla for the annual Feria de Abril ("April Fair"),
of which today, Sunday, is the final day.
Last Thursday the streets had been full of people in costume. Today I saw few
costumes, except on the horse-drawn carriages that plod around town. I imagine they
were all out at the fairground itself for the final day of performances.
Which is a shame; I was looking forward to pictures of the womens' dresses.
All this style, with the tight waists, ending in a flare of layers below the thigh.
The colors and patterns were loud and flamboyant;
they'd have been garish in most contexts.
Here and then, it was just high local color.
These young ladies' samples are pretty tame and subdued by contrast.
Gothic stonework? No lack of that in Sevilla. The cathedral is doubtless worth the
fee you need to pay to see the interior, but I didn't. The city outside was a
show for free.
A warm afternoon in early May. The temperature signs ranged from
32°C to 37°C in the course of the afternoon. Not particularly sticky
though - quite comfortable. By the end of May, temperatures here are
regularly in the 40's °C, i.e. 105+°F!
Lots of street entertainers in the touristic heart of town. This fellow was
singing Mexican-style ballads by a sidewalk cafe where I had a coffee.
And lots of green in the city! It seemed like there was a park behind every
second facade of buildings.
