Edinburgh, Scotland
Spring came slowly to most of Europe this year. It would finally catch up with me in
late June in London.
Early June found me under misty skies in Edinburgh, Scotland. The castle loomed on its ridge top.
Fortunately, the skies didn't actually rain - just lent atmosphere to the scene.
Internationally-themed budget eating, in a mall food court off Princes Street.
Did I really travel all this way for Real California Burritos?
German?
In Germany, doner kebab is Turkish fast food, even though I see it more
than wurst.
Hooda thunk I'd become a connoisseur of laundromats?!
Edinburgh's Laundry Kafe is
fully as cool as the legendary Prague Andy's, albeit at twice Andy's price.
Stuff is expensive in Edinburgh!
Who can argue with a laundromat that offers home-made coffee, and comfy
couches to sip it on?
A colorful multinational neighborhood south of the center.
This window does not show any actual bagpipes.
I half expected Edinburgh to beat tourists to death with bagpipe music,
as Seville can with flamenco, or Guadalajara with mariachis. To my relief, it never
happened!
A curious medical specialty!
The Royal Mile
The mile or so of main street outside the castle is the bustling
heart of the tourist action.
Buskers and vendors, restaurants, bars, and souvenir shops abound here.
The Scotsman Steps span the steep drop from the old town to Princes Street and Waverly
Bridge Station, the city's main rail hub. The steps are adjacent to the Scotsman
newspaper offices.
Waverly Bridge Station. My aging, elegant hotel was a short walk from here.
Next: More Scotland, including Glasgow.
