Bratislava, SK
Bratislava, SK
A hectic week on the road in Austria and Germany.
Still, a friend will soon visit Slovakia for the first time; it feels only fair to get
some more SK pictures up before he goes.
The Medical Garden, right behind the Medical School. Probably where they used to grow
medicinal herbs. Now it is open to the public as a park.
Under the New Bridge is a major bus hub, connecting both city and inter-city lines.
Between bridge approaches, I get a glimpse of Bratislava Castle as I wait for the bus to Vienna
on a day trip there.
You can (and do) also see Bratislava Castle from Obchodna St, the old shopping street
between the old town and the university (Slovak Tech).
Furrin words make their way into Slovak, just like with any language. Sometimes they take
on a funny-looking spelling.
Vienna, AT
An afternoon in Vienna is a treat in its own right, and an opportunity to pick up
The Economist - the most expensive newsweekly that I am willing to pay for.
When I was first in Bratislava, some fifteen years ago, I knew at least three places
to buy The Economist there. Now I need to remember to get it in Vienna. Sic transit
and all that!
Mariahilferstrasse
was always a living heart of daily-living Vienna (as opposed
to the tourist sights). Since the street has been pedestrianized, it rivals the Ring
itself as a venue for a stroll and hang out.
The Prater
One visit here each year is kind of a treat.
Welcome to Vienna, Senyor!
In Europe, Mexico is much more exotic - even semi-mythical - than we
think of it.
You'd think there should be a window selling donuts. Maybe in season there is.
Bratislava
A leafy street by the medical school.
The old Slovak National Theater, at the end of Hviezdoslav Square. The square borders
the old city, because it was once a water-filled moat.
