What's a Tivoli?
Before I came here, I knew only two place names in Copenhagen. The first and most famous is Tivoli Gardens.

I always figured it for a park. To my surprise, I found it across the street from the train station.

To my further suprise, it has amusement park rides, and costs 85 Kroner to get in (more on Friday after 8:00pm).

I went on Friday mid-afternoon, and remained well into the evening.

Evening sneaks up on you here. It doesn't get dark until about 11:30pm, and by 4:00am the sky is light and the stars are gone.

These pictures, especially this first set, are mid-to-late afternoon images.

Across the street from Tivoli on the far side from the train station is the City Hall. That tower with the clock belongs to it.

So how is Tivoli different from Disneyland?

No copyrighted cartoon characters for one thing. Also less hype, more class, arguably even dignity.

On t'other hand there are some underlying similarities. Rides off in the corners of the grounds, lots of rather expensive places to spend your money between the rides and the entry/exits.

My path around the park led first around a lake and garden area. Fewer rides here, and more sit-down eating areas.

We'll get to the rides and arcades in parts 2 and 3.
